In July 2024, Dr. Mikhail Chernyavsky, a leading vascular surgeon, Head of Research Department of Vascular and Interventional Surgery at Almazov Centre, held a masterclass in Ochapovsky Regional Clinical Hospital No. 1 in Krasnodar.
The masterclass consisted of a lecture and hands-on workshop, during which Dr. Chernyavsky shared the Almazov Centre's experience in treating patients with vascular diseases. The hands-on workshop included two surgical demonstrations, performed by Mikhail Chernyavsky and a surgical team from the Krasnodar Centre. One of the patients was a man with critical lower limb ischemia, who was at risk of requiring amputation. The patient underwent endovascular minimally invasive surgery under local anesthesia to restore blood flow in the lower limb arteries, which proved to be a successful procedure and averted the necessity for amputation and further disability.
The second case was a patient with a subclavian artery occlusion that led to the development of ‘steal syndrome’ manifested by fainting and dizziness, which significantly worsened the patient's quality of life. The patient also underwent endovascular surgery, during which a stent was implanted in the left subclavian artery and adequate blood flow was restored through the upper limb arteries and the vertebral artery feeding the brain. Following the procedure, the patient reported a notable improvement, with a reduction in dizziness symptoms and a reduced risk of future stroke.
Active discussion, planning and debate on surgical tactics in the operating theatre facilitated better sharing of experience and knowledge with colleagues.
In his lecture, Mikhail Chernyavsky addressed current issues in the treatment of patients with aortic and peripheral arterial diseases. He discussed new, cutting-edge technologies, including endovascular replacement for the aortic arch and thoracoabdominal aneurysms using branched and fenestrated stent grafts, as well as hybrid approaches to treating multilevel atherosclerotic lesions in brachiocephalic and lower limb arteries.
In his address, Vladimir Parkhanov, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences and Chief Physician of Ochapovsky Regional Clinical Hospital No. 1, highlighted the high level of medical care provided at Almazov Centre for the treatment of vascular diseases. The Vascular Surgery Clinic at the Centre is a leading provider of high-tech medical care for a wide range of diseases, including aortic lesions of various sites and complexities, peripheral arterial diseases, vascular malformations, diabetic foot syndrome and venous disease. The Clinic is at the forefront of modern Russian vascular surgery, offering advanced care that has reached a new level of excellence. This is largely due to the contributions of Evgeny Shlyakhto, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences and Director General of Almazov Centre, as well as the expertise and dedication of the highly skilled surgical team, led by Dr. Mikhail Chernyavsky. Following the meeting, it was decided to continue fruitful collaborative work and to sign a MoU on scientific and educational cooperation. This will facilitate the introduction of new technologies and the enhancement of the professional skills of surgeons in the region.
