On 2 September, the Institute of Medical Education welcomed 52 PhD students, 42 master’s students, 459 clinical residents and 278 students. In 2024, the Institute of Medical Education matriculated the seventh set of students for the General Medicine specialist’s degree, with a remarkable record competition – 158 applicants per place. Of the 257 applicants, 66 were enrolled.
The average and passing scores were not only the highest in the history of admission to Almazov Centre, but also broke the record among all universities of the Ministry of Health, positioning the Institute of Medical Education as one of the three leading universities in Russia, alongside Sechenov and Lomonosov Universities.
In comparison to the previous year, the number of applicants enrolled without entrance examinations has doubled: thirty-three schoolchildren who have won or been awarded prizes in the academic competitions. This is more than in all St. Petersburg medical universities combined.
The enrolment is expanding beyond St. Petersburg and the Leningrad Region to include Krasnoyarsk, the Krasnodar Territory, the Chelyabinsk Region, the Republic of Tatarstan, the Republic of Dagestan, and the Murmansk Region.
Academician Evgeny Shlyakhto, Director General of Almazov Centre, warmly welcomed the new generation of Almazov Centre students.
The celebration also featured congratulatory video messages and letters from Valentina Matvienko, Chairwoman of the Federation Council and the Board of Trustees of Almazov Centre, and Mikhail Murashko, Russian Minister of Health. The future doctors were congratulated by the Vice-Governor Oleg Ergashev on behalf of the Governor of St. Petersburg Alexander Beglov.
Elena Parmon, Director of the Institute of Medical Education, extended congratulations to the faculty, staff and first-year students. In keeping with tradition, she was presented with a symbolic 'time capsule' for safekeeping, in which the new students placed notes containing their dreams and wishes for their future.
Following the welcome remarks, the Academic Choir of the Almazov Centre, together with first-year students and supervisors, conducted by Elena Nivina, sang the student anthem 'GAUDEAMUS IGITUR'. At the end of the ceremony, the new students read the freshman oath.
The new academic year started at the Institute of Medical Education not only for specialist’s students, but also for master's, residents and PhD students. A total of 52 PhD students were enrolled in 23 programs. The most popular specialties were obstetrics and gynecology, cardiology, neurosurgery and cardiovascular surgery.
