Founder of the Centre
A prominent Russian cardiologist Vladimir Almazov graduated from the First Leningrad Medical Institute named after I.P. Pavlov (currently, First Pavlov State Medical University of St. Petersburg) in 1966 and became a member of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences in 1995. Over 47 years of his work at Pavlov State Medical University, Vladimir Almazov has contributed immensely to the training of highly qualified medical specialists. From 1971 to 1997, Vladimir Almazov was the head of Faculty Therapy Clinic that evolved into a versatile medical centre with a range of departments, including therapy, cardiology, endocrinology, hematology and intensive care. Almazov laid the cardiology research framework that served as a basis for the creation of the Russian Scientific Research Institute of Cardiology in 1980. Vladimir Almazov was in charge of the Institute from the very start and was deeply committed to improving the cardiology service in St. Petersburg and the Northwestern region of Russia, upgrading the skills of cardiologists and enhancing the quality of cardiac care. He also chaired the Cardiology Research Center of the Russian Ministry of Health for several years and from 1997 to 1999 he was the chairman of the Cardiology division affiliated with the Scientific Council of the Russian Ministry of Health. Almazov’s main contribution to delivering better care for cardiovascular patients is the creation of the single cardiology center providing not only therapeutic but also surgical treatment. Vladimir Almazov published more than 300 scientific papers, including 25 monographs and textbooks on various aspects of internal medicine. The most significant Almazov’s works focus on hypertension and coronary heart disease. He supervised 60 PhD and 25 doctoral theses. In 1998, Almazov was awarded the title “Honored Scientist of the Russian Federation”. In 1996, the International Biographical Centre (Cambridge) awarded him a medal and diploma of merit for his outstanding achievements in medicine of the 21st century. |
