Institute of Endocrinology
Director of the Institute
The Institute of Endocrinology at Almazov Centre is one of Russia’s leading research and teaching clinics for endocrinology. It has seven research laboratories bringing together 9 Doctors and 12 Candidates of Medical Science. The Institute uses the latest advances of Russian and foreign researchers in basic and clinical endocrinology.
Main research areas
The researchers of this Institute are developing methods for early diagnosis, treatment and prevention of hypothalamic-pituitary diseases, thyroid, parathyroid and adrenal gland disorders, neuroendocrine tumors, diabetes, obesity. Our researchers initiated and developed the study on vitamin D deficiency and its correlation with the development of diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. Together with the Institute of Perinatology and Pediatrics they study the predictors for the development of diabetes and cardiovascular diseases: polycystic ovarian syndrome and gestational diabetes. Gestational diabetes is studied for early detection and prevention of its short and long term adverse consequences in pregnant women and newborns.
Jointly with the Institute of Experimental Medicine, our specialists investigate the cellular mechanisms of various antihyperglycemic agents. The Institute investigates the possibilities of bariatric surgery for the treatment of not only obesity but also metabolic syndrome and diabetes mellitus.
The international consortium studies the relationship between various thyroid parameters and features of the course and outcomes of pregnancy.
The Institute of Endocrinology interacts with other divisions of the Centre, including the Institute of Molecular Biology and Genetics, the Institute of Experimental Medicine and the Research Laboratory of Nuclear Medicine, to investigate the problem of diagnosis, treatment and prognosis for neuroendocrine tumors.
The specialists of pediatric endocrinology lab study monogenic disorders of insulin secretion and sexual development. The pediatric endocrinology department provides comprehensive diagnostic and therapeutic care for children with sexual differentiation disorders as well as rare genetic syndromes and other endocrine disorders in childhood and adolescence.
The Institute of Endocrinology boasts highly qualified specialists: endocrinologists, endocrine surgeons, neurosurgeons as well as unique diagnostic facilities, including for molecular genetic studies. The advantage of the Institute is that it is a part of Europe's largest multidisciplinary healthcare facility – Almazov National Medical Research Centre.
The Institute has mastered the clamp study technique. The specialists use the hyperinsulinemic-euglycemic clamps in type 1 diabetic patients and healthy volunteers using insulins of various durations.
Major areas and technologies
In 2009, the doctors at Almazov Centre perform robotic-assisted left adrenalectomy, the first ever in the Northwestern district, using da Vinci Surgical System | Workshop on bariatric surgery and minimally invasive colorectal surgery on large laboratory animals (pigs) |
