On June 22-24, the Russian-French Conference «Sleep Disorders as a Cardiovascular Risk Factor: epidemiology, diagnosis and treatment» was held. The conference organizers were: Almazov National Medical Research Centre and French Association for Sleep Medicine «Hypnos».
In the center of somnologists’attention was the syndrome of obstructive sleep apnea (OSAS) and its after-effects. This common diseaseperiodically causes partial or complete cessation of breathing during sleep. Continuing more than 10 seconds interruption of air flow can lead to a decrease in blood oxygen level, rough sleepfragmentation and excessive daytime sleepiness as well as to metabolic and cardiovascular disorders.
The conference was attended by the leading European experts in the field of somnology: Professor J.C.Meurice (France), Dr. S. Royant-Parola (France), Professor M. Oyayon (France), Professor P. Escourrou (France), Dr. R. Heinzer (Switzerland ) and others.
The lectures included such topics as epidemiology and pathophysiology of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS); OSAC cardiovascular consequences; Diagnostics and therapy of OSAS. One of the presentations was devoted to the main stages of somnology in Russia.
Specialist of the Almazov Centre presented the results of their own research:
- «Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome and refractory arterial hypertension» — Alexandra Konradi, Professor, RAS Corresponding member, Deputy Director General for Science;
- «Epidemiology of sleep disorders in the Russian population» — Yuri Sviryaev, Doctor of Medical Science, Head of the Group on somnology;
- «Clinical cases» — Lyudmila Korostovtseva, Candidate of Medical Science, researcher of the Group on somnology.
The conference participants were actively involved in discussions on the diagnosis and treatment of various sleep disorders, exchanged their experience and achievements. Conference master classes allowed practical training in diagnostic methods — in particular, the Miniscreenpolysomnography (Lowenstein) as well as non-invasive ventilation.
