International Brain Awareness Week is an annual global campaign organized at the initiative of the Society for Neuroscience to raise public awareness of the progress and benefits of brain research and neuroscience. This year’s event takes place from March 12 to 17 and is a series of afternoon lectures and seminars. The first Brain Awareness Week was held in 1996 and involved 160 organizations. Today, there are more than 400 participating organizations from 58 countries of the world.
International Brain Awareness Week takes place on almost the same days in all participating countries and provides an opportunity to focus national and international attention on the issues that are relevant to all humankind. This year’s topic is Biosensors. It focuses on the interfaces that help the brain analyze the information from internal and external environment. During the Brain Awareness Week, the participants discuss the progress in treatment of a particular disease or disorder and the ways to improve the brain performance or prevent brain disorders.
On this occasion, the Polenov Neurosurgical Institute held a meeting of the Epilepsy Group chaired by professor Valery Bersnev on March 13, 2018. The initial structure of the Institute implied a comprehensive study of clinical and neurophysiological diagnosis and the methods for surgical treatment of nervous system diseases and disorders as well as research in anatomy, physiology, pathology and biochemistry. In 2017, twenty-two theses were defended in the Dissertation Board in three specialties: neurosurgery, nervous diseases, radiation therapy and diagnosis.
