On August 25, at the inauguration ceremony of the annual ESC Congress in Munich, Prof. Evgeny Shlyakhto, Director General of the Almazov Centre and Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, was awarded with the Gold Medal of the European Society of Cardiology.
The ESC Gold Medal is the highest honor and international recognition of the outstanding achievements in the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of cardiovascular diseases. The ESC Gold Medal is awarded annually to the exceptional scientists for their extraordinary contribution to the world cardiovascular medicine. Along with Prof. Shlyakhto, other gold medalists for 2018 are Marc Alan Pfeffer, Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School (USA), and Ottavio Alfieri, Professor of Cardiac Surgery at San Raffaele University Hospital (Italy).
Since 1968, the European Society of Cardiology has recognized multiple outstanding scientists and clinicians. Until today, the only Russian cardiologist honoured with this award was Prof. Evgeny Chazov (Moscow).
