On March 22–24, Almazov Centre hosted the All-Russian Research and Education Conference with international participation, Saint Petersburg Forum — How to Fight Obesity and Type 2 Diabetes: Patient Focus.
The Forum was organized by Almazov National Medical Research Centre, St. Petersburg Association of Endocrinologists and Society for Bariatric Surgery. It brought together about 400 people.
The Forum provided a platform to exchange information on the latest advancements and their introduction into clinical practice as well as patient-focused treatment of obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus.
Traditionally, the event brought together experts from all specialties professionally involved in the treatment of overweight and diabetes: endocrinologists, dietitians, psychologists, surgeons, pediatricians, gynecologists, cardiologists, nephrologists and fitness specialists. The Forum enabled them to combine their efforts and enhance the efficiency of various overweight control methods by multidisciplinary approach.
The programs of the first two days were dedicated to specialists and were titled “From science to practice” and “Why treatment does not always work?
A large part of the program was devoted to the Young Scientists School sponsored by the Russian Science Foundation.
The third day featured the forum for patients “How to fight overweight?” that attracted more than 50 patients experiencing this problem. The experts spoke about the advanced methods of treating overweight, including surgery and fitness. The patients shared their successful experience in losing weight by various methods under medical supervision and told how their lives changed after treatment. For some patients bariatric surgery was the only option to lose weight and solve a number of health problems associated with obesity.
