On October 10–11, Almazov Centre hosted the 2nd Saint Petersburg Lymphology Forum 21st Century Lymphology: New Approaches and Relevant Research.
The Forum was a venue for the leading foreign and Russian experts to share their experience and knowledge. It brought together lymphologists, phlebologists, angiologists, internists, general practitioners, endocrinologists, surgeons, oncologists, cardiovascular surgeons, physiotherapists, rehabilitation therapists, exercise therapists and doctors of other specialties.
The Forum focused on the advances and prospects for lymphology in modern medicine and covered the issues of basic and clinical lymphology, role of the lymphatic system in health and disease, novel approaches and relevant research in oncology, new technologies in surgery, integration, partnership, innovations in angiology and vascular surgery, multidisciplinary approach in modern lymphology, controversial and outstanding issues in the diagnosis and treatment of lymphedema and lipedema.
At the session “Achievements of Lymphology in Modern Medicine”, surgeons from Andijan State Medical Institute (Uzbekistan) – Prof. E. Dzhumabaev and Prof. Yu. Egamov gave presentations on the use of methods for regional stimulation of lymphatic drainage in a set of measures that can solve the problem of treatment and prevention of surgical abdominal infection.
The audience showed great interest in the presentations on lymphovenous malformations. Surgeon of Microsurgery Department at the Pediatric Medical University L. Kanina presented the good outcomes of treating rare lymphatic malformations in children. Prof. Jochen Roessler from Freiburg University Hospital in Germany gave a presentation on the mechanisms underlying malformations on the molecular level.

Prof. Waldemar Olszewski and Marzanna Zaleska from the Medical Research Centre of the Polish Academy of Sciences presented fundamental data on the effectiveness of various compression therapy types in the comprehensive treatment of lymphedema.
M. Berezko, surgeon of Phlebology Centre, and Dimitrios Dionysiou, Associate Professor at Plastic Surgery Department of Aristotle University (Thessaloniki, Greece) discussed the complex aspects of the diagnosis and treatment of lymphedema and lipedema.
Of particular interest was the Workshop on Lymph Taping conducted by Erika Demeter, the specialist of Physio Sport Therapy Academy (Romania).
With its interdisciplinary and practically oriented approach based on the involvement of specialists from various fields, the 2nd St. Petersburg Lymphology Forum provided a valuable impetus for further development of lymphology in Russia.
