On September 23–27, Polenov Neurosurgical Institute (branch of Almazov Centre) held a workshop Using Semiconductor Laser for the Surgical Treatment of Degenerative-Dystrophic Spine Diseases. The workshop was intended for doctors from China.
In addition to the theoretical part, the workshop included a practical session on the surgical treatment of patients with degenerative disease in the lumbar spine with herniation.
This method has been used since 2004 for the surgical treatment in patients with diseases of the spine and of the peripheral nervous system with pain syndromes.
Since 2012, the doctors at the Institute have been using laser puncture treatment at a wavelength of 0.96-0.98 µm for disk-related forms of degenerative-dystrophic spine diseases.
Specialists of Almazov Centre, together with specialists from other scientific and practical institutions of Russia and China, have been studying the effect of various laser wavelengths on the tissue of the intervertebral disc in degenerative spinal diseases. The experts of the two countries share their experience and practical observations.
A similar educational cycle was delivered for Chinese doctors in May 2019 when five doctors were trained.
The article entitled “Joint Russian-Chinese experience in the study of laser-induced effects and practical work for the puncture treatment of intervertebral disc degenerative disease” was published in the Russian Neurosurgical Journal Named After Professor Polenov based on this international collaboration.
