Prof. Vladislav Cherebillo, neurosurgeon of Almazov Centre, receives the RF Government award in science and technology for the development and implementation in clinical practice of innovative microsurgical, endoscopic, endovascular and reconstructive neurosurgical procedures for skull base lesions.
Prof. Cherebillo performed the first transsphenoidal endoscopic surgery, which gets access to the brain tumor by entering through the nasal passage, in 1996 and he is rightly considered the founder of this surgical method in Russia. This method was first used in St. Petersburg, then in Moscow, and now it is used in clinics of other cities.
Transsphenoidal access to pituitary tumors is seen as the most preferable and most favorable for patients since it does not require craniotomy.
Today, Russian neurosurgeons boast the world's largest number of such endoscopic interventions for brain stem lesions.
