In April, 2017, the vascular surgeons under the supervision of the Head of the Vascular and Interventional Surgery Department, Dr. Mikhail Chernyavsky, performed endoprosthesis replacement of aorta in two patients. One of them had a giant aneurysm of the abdominal aorta of 10 cm in size, while the other had an aneurysm of a complicated topographic anatomy in the form of an hourglass extending to the iliac arteries.
The patients’ state was confounded by the main disease, concomitant pathology and extremely high risk of postoperative complications in case of open surgical interventions. With the endovascular modern bifurcation stent grafts the Almazov Centre doctors achieved 100% percent aneurysms exclusion of the blood stream and saved the patients from aneurism rupture and internal bleeding.
This innovative technique allows avoiding disability of patients, significantly reduces the time of their stay in the clinic and the terms of rehabilitation, as well as improves the quality of life and life expectancy. The doctors of the Vascular and Interventional Surgery Department of the Almazov National Medical Research Centre introduced the minimally invasive reconstructive surgeries in the lesions of peripheral arteries, abdominal aorta aneurysms and descending thoracic aorta into daily clinical practice.
