Core Facility
History
The idea to establish core facilities arose in Russia back in the 1990s in view of the need to update the material and technical resources of research and educational institutions at the same time. Based on the experience of the world's leading universities, it was proposed to use shared research equipment.
The first core facilities received support from the Russian Foundation for Basic Research, and since 2005, they have been funded under federal target programs by the Federal Agency for Science and Innovation. Later, this support was provided by the Russian Ministry of Education and Science.
Shared resources
Core facilities provide the opportunity for the shared use of high-tech research equipment and advanced research facilities. Cores are centralized facilities which offer shared equipment, resources and expertise to researchers and investigators.
Objectives
According to the «Fundamentals of the Russian Federation Policy in the field of science and technology development for the period until 2010 and beyond», the major tasks of the centre are to develop basic science and crucial applied research, establish and provide resources and advanced research equipment for unique research facilities and a network of core facilities.
In the future, core facilities should become the main reference sites in the regions to ensure exploratory research, integrated development, implementation of major innovative projects and help increase the interest of young professionals in science.
