Twenty years ago, Prof. Evgeny Shlyakhto, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, as a student and follower of the Centre’s founder, Academician of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences Vladimir Almazov, became the head of Almazov Centre (then called the Research Institute of Cardiology).
For two decades, Evgeny Shlyakhto has been engaging those around him in new goals that are always beyond the horizon. During this time, the medical facility that originally started as a cardiology service has expanded into a versatile medical centre that integrates research, education and clinical care and dedicates to not only provide high-quality health care but also to develop national medical science and train “doctors of the future” who are always up to date with the latest advances in medical science.
Since 2001, Prof. Shlyakhto has been Chief Cardiologist of Saint Petersburg, since 2002 – chief visiting cardiologist of the Russian Ministry of Health for the Northwestern federal district and since 2018 – for the Northwestern, Volga, North Caucasian and Southern federal districts.
In April 2020, Evgeny Shlyakhto was appointed the head of the Interdepartmental Medical Working Group at the Interdepartmental Council on the prevention of the spread of the new coronavirus infection (COVID-19) in St. Petersburg targeting on the most relevant issues of organizing medical care for patients in all areas together with the expert community. As a longtime public health official with extensive expertise, Evgeny Shlyakhto successfully coordinates the interaction of involved city departments.
