Almazov Centre was repurposed to receive COVID-19 patients for the third time. From June 25 to August 17, its Rehabilitation Clinic at Parkhomenko avenue treated a total of 714 COVID-19 patients.
This time, doctors had to deal with course of the disease changed through virus mutations. Doctors saw more young adults among hospitalized patients.
Patients with chronic diseases such as diabetes mellitus, coronary artery disease, hypertension had a more severe course of coronavirus disease. Therapy was selected on a case-by-case basis taking into account the patient’s status.
Doctors also noted this time that patients rapidly developed lung damage despite the comprehensive therapy complying with the approved guidelines. For this reason and based on the accumulated experience, they regularly adjusted the existing treatment regimens.
Patients were often hospitalized in a very severe condition, there were even people after heart transplantation. Patients with the most severe course of coronavirus disease were transferred to the Rehabilitation Clinic from other city hospitals.
Where necessary, patients with coronavirus infection underwent surgery (general, vascular, thoracic and X-ray endovascular surgery). A total of 9 surgical interventions were performed.
Along with the closure of this coronavirus unit, some of the patients who still required treatment were transferred to other city hospitals but most of them were discharged home.
Patients treated at Almazov Centre praised the high quality of care as well as the conditions for patients in the hospital. Chief executives of the Centre constantly monitored the organization of the treatment process.
The Rehabilitation Clinic will resume its normal service on September 1 but if necessary, its medical staff is ready to join the fight against COVID-19 at any moment.
It is worth noting that for the first time Almazov Centre was repurposed to treat patients with coronavirus infection in May 2020. The second time was in December 2020.
