On September 1, the Medical Education Institute of Almazov Centre held a matriculation ceremony for its fourth set of students. Following the admission campaign, 187 new students were enrolled for this academic year, the passing score being 278, which is the highest level of the medical institutes in the Russian Federation.
The particular feature of the admission campaign 2021 in specialist training programme in General medicine was the use of a new electronic service «online admission»: 129 applicants (14%) applied online and the admission took place in one round.
The competition was 12 applicants per place. The average score also was very high (294) and exceeded the 2020 indicator (287) by 2.5%.
Basic medical education with a strong research focus usually serves as the foundation for the advanced digital training and rich opportunity for analytical monitoring and implementation of the latest biomedical research products into clinical practice. This educational approach can be offered only in an industry-oriented research facility such as Almazov Centre.
Almazov Centre provides a rich basis of the research institute and national-level clinic for the implementation of higher education programme in General Medicine: this breakthrough educational project undoubtedly demonstrates a new model of medical education.
The ceremony started with warm welcome words by Director General of Almazov Centre Evgeny Shlyakhto:
“Now you face a long way of 6 years to realize your potential. We have mutual obligations. As an institution, we should create an environment for you, and you should use all the opportunities given, your competencies and knowledge in order to become modern doctors – not only doctors but also researchers. You are all great, you passed the entrance tests. We sincerely appreciate your success. This is the first step, and you have a long and interesting journey ahead. I wish you success, good luck, happiness and health, we are here to help you achieve all of your goals together!”
Valentina Matvienko, Chairwoman of the Russian Federation Council and the Board of Trustees at Almazov Centre, congratulated the students:
Dear friends! Today you are not only the students, you are initiated into the students of the Russian healthcare flagship, Almazov National Medical Research Centre. I sincerely congratulate you and I am convinced that you made the right responsible choice necessary for our country and its citizens. The festive ceremony featured video congratulations by Mikhail Murashko, Minister of Health of the Russian Federation, Alexander Gutsan, Presidential Plenipotentiary Representative to the Northwestern Federal District; Alexander Beglov, Governor of St. Petersburg, and Vyacheslav Makarov, Chairman of the St. Petersburg Legislative Assembly.
The students solemnly took an oath of allegiance to Almazov Centre and handed over a special time capsule to Elena Parmon, Director of the Medical Education Institute. The time capsule containing freshmen’s responses to questions for future doctors will be opened in 6 years, prior to the graduation ceremony, to provide a reflection on what they have learnt.

At the end of the ceremony, Evgeny Shlyakhto thanked the senior students who worked in the «COVID -19 red zone» saving human lives. The General Director of Almazov Centre awarded them with Letters of Gratitude from St. Petersburg Legislative Assembly for their high professionalism, commitment and diligence during the time of new coronavirus infection COVID-19; medals from the Health Care Professionals Union of St. Petersburg and Letters of Appreciation from Almazov Centre for the honest and professional help in assisting patients with COVID-19 infection.
