On August 29, The Lancet published the results of the largest international multicenter randomized trial – Asymptomatic Carotid Surgery Trial (ACST-2). The results were presented at the European Society of Cardiology Congress on August 30, 2021.
The study organized by the University of Oxford included 3,625 people from 33 countries, including Russia. All patients with severe unilateral or bilateral lesions of the internal carotid artery were randomized to stenting (n = 1811) or carotid endarterectomy (n = 1814). During 3 years, the team of vascular surgeons and neurologists of Almazov Centre included 57 patients followed up by the specialists.
The data from a large clinical trial demonstrate that stenting and open surgery are low-risk procedures that show equal efficacy in asymptomatic carotid stenosis treatment.
The Lancet is one of the world's oldest and best-known general medical journals with an Impact Factor of 79, ranked the second among 169 medical journals worldwide (2020 Journal Citation Reports).
The publication in this journal attests to the high level of clinical and research development of Almazov Centre.
