On May 4, the Centre held a scientific and practical conference for vascular and endovascular surgeons with showcase surgeries for endovascular aortic arch repair. During the conference, Chief of the Research Department of Vascular and Interventional Surgery, Dr. Mikhail Chernyavsky shared his experience in endovascular repair of the aortic arch and its branches.
Head of the Department for X-Ray Endovascular Diagnostic and Treatment Methods of the Republican Cardiology Centre Timur Khafizov (Ufa) shared his experience in using the in situ stent graft fenestration technique for endovascular repair of the aortic arch and its branches in a surgical emergency, such as aortic rupture and dissection.
The conference showcased two live surgeries for endovascular repair of the aortic arch using in situ stent graft fenestration in the brachiocephalic arteries with subsequent endovascular repair (male patients with aortic arch aneurysms measuring about 8 cm in diameter).
“The majority of patients with cardiovascular disorders also have serious comorbidity when traditional open surgery is deemed too risky and in most cases impossible,” explains Mikhail Chernyavsky. “Therefore, open surgery was not possible in these patients and it made us search for a safe alternative.”
Such surgeries are extremely challenging and require not only the proper expertise of the team, but also specialized equipment. The Almazov Centre’s hybrid operating room is the best in Russia and allows surgeons to perform such procedures.

Such surgical procedures seemed impossible two years ago, but today it is difficult to imagine modern vascular surgery without these minimally invasive technologies.
