May 17th is World Hypertension Day. The day was first marked by the World Hypertension League (WHL) in 2005, with 24 countries participating in the event. The day was organised by the WHL to draw attention to hypertension and the medical complications associated with it.
According to the health experts, some of the main reasons behind hypertension are smoking, obesity, poor dietary habits, and a sedentary lifestyle.
On May 18, experts gathered at the St. Petersburg City Centre for Medical Prevention to discuss the prevalence of hypertension and ways to achieve effective control of this disease.
Head of the Research Laboratory of Epidemiology of Chronic NCDs Dr. Oksana Rotar gave a presentation entitled “Uncontrolled arterial hypertension – how to eliminate the cause and achieve the effectiveness of treatment.”
It should be noted that this year, on World Hypertension Day, the International Society of Hypertension released its position paper on the Virtual Management of Hypertension: Lessons from the COVID 19 Pandemic. Developed by an international panel of experts, the position paper identifies key modalities for the virtual assessment and management of hypertension and provides recommendations based on consensus of the writing group.
