The largest medical event in St. Petersburg, the 5th St. Petersburg Medical Innovation Forum came to an end. It provided a platform for the exchange of experience and achievements in the treatment of cardiovascular diseases for the specialists of the Research Department of Vascular and Interventional Surgery. However, this is not the only event of its kind that took place in May for vascular surgeons, who successfully completed what may be called a real “marathon” of major conferences and meetings.
From May 15 to 17, the XXV Annual Session of Bakulev National Medical Research Centre of Cardiovascular Surgery with the All-Russian Conference of Young Scientists took place in Moscow. Researchers of the Research Department of Vascular and Interventional Surgery made presentations on the effectiveness of angioplasty with renal artery stenting, the results of aortic arch replacement, as well as hybrid procedures for lesions of the iliac segment combined with common femoral artery lesions.
The opening day of the 5th St. Petersburg Medical Innovation Forum on May 18 featured the symposium Translational Approach in Surgery of the Aorta and Aortic Valve where head of the Department of X-ray Endovascular Methods of Diagnosis and Treatment D. Zubarev performed a successful showcase surgery for transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI).
Invited experts in the treatment of aortic and heart valve diseases from leading Russian medical centres spoke about the possibilities of hybrid surgery of the thoracic aorta, the need for distal embolism protection and the results of transcatheter aortic valve implantation.
The 5th Saint Petersburg Medical Innovation Forum also featured Almazov Youth Medical Forum 2022. It aimed at bringing together young scientists, residents and students from all over Russia and abroad. For young specialists, the Research Department of Vascular and Interventional Surgery headed by Mikhail Chernyavsky organized a special symposium Paradigm Shift in Surgery of the Aorta and its Branches. For 3 hours, the participants were brought to the world of modern vascular surgery of the 21st century, they listened to lectures on unique promising treatments done at Almazov Centre and watched surgery broadcast live from a hybrid operating room. The audience had the opportunity to ask questions to the operating team in real time and could check various endovascular devices specially prepared by surgeons for a clearer understanding of all the stages of the procedures. This part was of particular interest to young people, because few have the opportunity to step into a real operating room and see the most modern equipment and technologies. At the end of the symposium, Dr. Chernyavsky invited everyone to visit the hybrid operating room and see the advanced methods for the treatment of vascular diseases at Almazov Centre.
The “scientific marathon” ended in Kislovodsk, where on May 20 the XXXVII International Conference Horizons of Modern Angiology, Vascular Surgery and Phlebology traditionally brought together doctors from all over Russia. Every year, the number of participants is steadily increasing with the growing interest and importance of the conference for the medical community. Head of the Cardiovascular Surgery Department A. Chernov and PhD student A. Artemova presented the experience of Almazov Centre and addressed the topical issues of open, endovascular and hybrid surgery at the breakout sessions.
Participation in such major events promotes international cooperation and the development of innovative treatment approaches and contributes to the scientific and practical potential of researchers. Such conferences provide a meeting place to share experiences and are essential for future scientific progress of vascular surgery in Russia.
