On July 9-13, the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis (ISTH) held the ISTH 2022 Congress, a premier international medical conference for experts in the fields of thrombosis, hemostasis and vascular biology. The Congress brought together doctors and researchers involved in the diagnosis and treatment of hematological and thromboembolic disorders and focused on pathophysiology of venous and arterial thrombosis, hemorrhagic complications of anticoagulant therapy, new aspects of the fundamental understanding of blood coagulation factors and the role of platelets in the hemostatic system.
Special sessions were devoted to achievements and problems in the field of gene therapy, the relationship between the immune system and hemostasis in thrombus development and resolution, modern aspects of hereditary hemophilia diagnosis and treatment, new ideas about thrombotic complications in COVID-19 patients. Particular attention was drawn to the sessions related to the biology of coagulation, the structure and functions of coagulation factors, the relationship between inflammation, primary immunity and thrombus formation, as well as signaling pathways and molecular mechanisms of platelets, megakaryocytes and endothelial cells. Of great interest were sessions devoted to new achievements in the field of timely diagnosis and prevention of venous thromboembolic events, as well as the principles of patient management.
Researchers of the Word-Class Research Centre for Personalized Medicine took part online in this year’s congress. Senior researcher of the Cardio-Oncology Research Group O.S. Melnichnikova presented the results of studies on the mechanisms of venous thrombosis in patients with central nervous system tumors. The work is carried out by a multidisciplinary team of researchers including neurosurgeons, oncologists, cardiologists and laboratory doctors at two site: the main clinical facility and Polenov Neurosurgical Institute. The poster “Laboratory assessment of prothrombotic status in patients with primary brain tumors” presented the first results of the study focusing on the search for predictors of venous thromboembolic events in patients with brain tumors of glial origin. Development of an algorithm for risk stratification of venous thrombosis in patients with glioblastomas is one of the tasks of the Cardio-Oncology Research Group.
The Congress also presented the results of the study on the mechanisms of development of chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension. The study is carried out by the specialists of the Non-Coronary Heart Disease Research Department and the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Genetics and supported by a grant from the Russian Science Foundation. Professor of the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Genetics O.V. Sirotkina presented a poster «Erythrocyte-derived microvesicles and microRNA-144/451 cluster in patients with post-thromboembolic syndrome» devoted to the molecular aspects of the transformation of acute pulmonary embolism into post-thrombotic syndrome.
The ISTH 2022 Congress once again brought together the world's leading experts in the field of thrombosis, hemostasis and angiology and provided a platform for discussing the latest scientific achievements aimed at personalized patient management in terms of thromboprophylaxis and translation of scientific developments into clinical practice.
