Despite modern diagnostic advances, today patients continue to require surgical treatment for giant brain tumors.
A 37-year-old patient was admitted to Polenov Neurosurgical Institute (a branch of Almazov Centre) with a huge brain tumor (colorectal cancer metastases) with pronounced extracranial growth. The size of the tumor, its localization and abundant blood supply made it possible to carry out surgical treatment exclusively in a highly specialized neurosurgical clinic.
The patient underwent a radical resection of the tumor with repair of defects in the superior sagittal sinus, dura mater, and bones of the cranial vault using auto- and allografts. The cosmetic defect was completely eliminated. The surgery was performed by neurosurgeon Alexey Ulitin.
“Such cases still occur in our clinical practice and are not due to late diagnosis of the disease, but rather are due to patient’s fear of surgery, which is what happened in this case. A personalized approach to each such patient allows us to achieve excellent functional outcome,” comments Director of Polenov Neurosurgical Institute Dr. Konstantin Samochernykh.
The patient's prognosis is favorable. She was discharged home with plans for outpatient follow-up.
