In August 2022, Almazov Centre began using the WEL-1000H heart-lung machine in the experimental operating room for large animals of the Preclinical Translational Research Centre.
As part of scientific cooperation with the Rosatom Corporation, a series of experiments on large animals (pigs) was carried out where heart surgeries were performed under cardiopulmonary bypass with an innovative device synthesizing nitric oxide from atmospheric air. The preclinical stage of work will make it possible to introduce a new approach into cardiac surgery, which will significantly improve the results of heart surgery. This complex experiment became possible due to the availability of the equipment for heart surgery including a heart-lung machine, a cardiac surgery monitor, an echocardiography machine, a wide panel of laboratory tests as well as the pathology unit.
The well-coordinated work of veterinarians and consultants as well as the sophisticated technical equipment of the Preclinical Translational Research Centre will allow the underlying ideas to be promptly implemented into clinical practice to help patients. This work involves specialists from the departments of pediatric cardiovascular surgery, anesthesiology and critical care for children, cardiovascular ICU.
