On October 12, 2023, a significant event for national urology took place: for the first time «live surgery» session was broadcasted from the Russian Federation. Congress of the International Society of Urology SIU2023 (Société Internationale d'Urologie, one of the three largest international urological professional societies, founded in 1905) was held in Istanbul, Turkey.
The Congress organizers invited the surgeons from Almazov National Medical Research Centre due to their tremendous experience in robotic surgery.
Almazov Centre experts have performed the demonstration robot-assisted kidney resection — a surgical intervention considered to be one of the most complex in urology and, at the same time, very dangerous, especially during demonstration surgery, since it involves the oncological surgery stage, work with the main vessels and the reconstructive stage, and can be associated with serious bleeding.
Professor Mikhail Mosoyan, Head of the Urology Department with a robotic surgery course and clinic, in assistance with Dmitry Fedorov led the surgical intervention and explained the course in English for a wide audience from all over the world.
The Congress included live streams from operating rooms around the world and participation of the leading specialists from USA, Canada, Germany, India, China, South Africa, South Korea, etc. The Almazov Centre team had an honor to be the first in history to represent the Russian Federation at world urology event within the «live surgery» stream.
At the same day, the Rector of Bashkir State Medical University, RAS Academician Valentin Pavlov brilliantly performed robot-assisted plasty of the pyeloureteral segment in a patient with stricture of the ureteral prilobranchal stricture and hydronephrosis.
Researchers and clinicians in urology, gynecology, oncology and cross disciplines attended the SIU2023 Congress, 3500 participants represented more than 24 countries; the online broadcast from the Almazov Centre experts attracted more than 700 attendances with an additional Internet audience of more than 15,000 participants.
The Congress covered a wide range of urological surgical interventions of varying difficulty level, and the only “live surgery” in kidney resection on the Da Vinci robot was performed by the Almazov Centre surgeons.
