1986 – graduated from Kirov Military Medical Academy.
1986–1989 – surgeon in the Navy of the USSR Ministry of Defense.
1989– 2000 – Senior Laboratory Assistant, Researcher, Senior Researcher, Lung Transplant Laboratory of the Pulmonology Research Institute of Pavlov State Medical University.
1998 – defended his PhD thesis on the topic “Optimal method for donor lung preservation”.
2000–2005 – thoracic surgeon at the University of Strasbourg (France), St. Therese Clinic (Luxembourg) and Avicenna Hospital (France).
2002 – received the grant from the European Respiratory Society for the development of surgical methods for pulmonary emphysema treatment. After returning from France until 2009, he worked as a thoracic surgeon in the Thoracic Surgery Unit at City Hospital No. 2 of St. Petersburg.
2009 – till now – Head of the Research Laboratory for Thoracic Surgery and Transplantation at Almazov Centre.
Membership in national and international societies
Since 2012 – Official transplant expert from the Russian Federation at the Council of Europe (Strasbourg), since 2013 – chief transplant surgeon of St. Petersburg.
Member of the Russian Society of Transplantology, European Respiratory Society.
Personal achievements
Dr. German Nikolaev took part in many first clinical lung transplants in Russia.
In 2009, he was awarded a Diploma of the Russian Ministry of Health for the first successful bilateral lung transplant in Russia and «Best Doctors of Russia» award.
In 2010, together with cardiac surgeons of Almazov Centre, he took part in the first successful heart transplant in the Northwestern Federal District.
In 2015, he was awarded the Honorary Badge of Excellence in Healthcare by the Russian Ministry of Health.
