Molecular and genetic determinants of metabolic syndrome
Metabolic syndrome refers to a combination of pathological conditions, the simultaneous occurrence of which increases the risk of cardiovascular disease and / or diabetes.
Molecular mechanisms that cause the development of the metabolic syndrome are not completely understood, and only their detailed study could provide a basis for the development of therapeutic approaches for the treatment. Obesity plays an important role in the pathogenesis of metabolic syndrome, and the causes and mechanisms of dysfunction of adipose tissue in obesity are not clear enough. Dysregulation of synthesis and secretion of adipokines in obesity may be associated with the development of hypoxia in adipose tissue, oxidative stress, and / or local stimulation of molecular mechanisms responsible for the induction of cellular aging processes in adipose tissue. Currently, the Group of Cell Biology of Institute of Molecular Biology and Genetics studies the role of hypoxia and cellular senescence after start of the molecular genetic mechanisms responsible for the development of cellular dysfunction of adipose tissue in patients with obesity and metabolic syndrome. In future, a potential molecular target will be selected for correction the functions of adipose tissue in obesity and metabolic syndrome and development of an experimental model for investigating the treatment possibilities.
