The Almazov National Medical Research Centre is a major scientific contributor and healthcare provider in Russia offering high-tech medical care and delivering care both under compulsory health insurance and on a fee-for-service basis. Today, the Almazov Centre is a rapidly growing facility that has evolved over the years from a specialized cardiology service into a versatile clinical and scientific research centre of national importance. The last few years have been decisive for the Centre. The scientific, educational and clinical activities are expanding: new scientific departments have been opened, seven research institutes and the medical education institute with 14 departments have been functioning. In 2010, the Perinatal Centre was put into operation; in 2011, the Rehabilitation Clinic opened its doors after the reconstruction. The number of patients receiving high-tech medical care is increasing. In 2014, Polenov Russian Research Institute of Neurosurgery became a branch of the Almazov Centre. At the end of 2016, the Rehabilitation Clinic for Children and the Pre-Clinical Translational Research Centre were put into operation. The Centre uniquely and harmoniously combines the basic and applied research in various fields with the delivery of diverse specialized medical care, including high-tech, and continuous interdisciplinary training of scientific and medical personnel. The development strategy of the Almazov Centre implies the improvement of the scientific, educational, innovation and technology infrastructure designed to provide a full cycle of translational research in medicine. As part of the Russian Strategy for the Development of Medical Science Until 2025, the Centre will carry out organizational- and scientific-methodical guidance of healthcare institutions specializing in cardiology and angiology, develop professional standards and federal state standards for higher education, coordinate the training of leading field specialists, including the academic staff. Altogether, this allows the Almazov Centre to meet the major scientific, practical and educational challenges of today’s medicine based on breakthrough technologies of fundamental importance for health care development in Russia and to facilitate the integration of the Russian medical science into the international academic community. |
